"The Southern Mountain Melody Makers"
Welcome

Mac Traynham and I are pleased to tell you about the release our first CD together "Turkey in the Mountain".  Please take a moment to browse over our website and listen to the track samples

Mac and I have been playing old time music together since 1985, when I first visited Mac for fiddle lessons.  I was instantly influenced by Mac's interests in old time music, which was and still is much centered on old time regional styles of the Blue Ridge of southwest Virginia and adjacent North Carolina. As soon as I was able to play up to speed, Mac and I started ripping 'em out!

The content represented on the CD primarily comes from tunes learned from Virginia old timers in the counties of Floyd, Grayson, Carroll, Patrick, Smyth, and Franklin, as well as Surry and Alleghany counties, North Carolina.  We have worked diligently and reverently for more than 20 years to learn the true banjo and fiddle styles of this area, driven by the love of the traditional heritage and our ties to the region. All of our learning has come from recordings or directly from the older  musicians themselves.  We have most often learned our tunes, respectively, from the same musicians or community of musicians, so our repertoires and tune versions are usually very similar.  It is because of this strong similarity in our influences that our banjo-fiddle tunes and twin fiddle pieces are so well matched.
Musicians that have always seemed to turn up as the sources for our tunes are Wade Ward, Tommy Jarrell, William Marshall, Norman Edmonds, Ivan Weddle, Dent Wimmer, Sydna and Fulton Myers, Hick Edmonds, and Hobart Smith, just to name a few.

All of these folks are gone now, and I hope we've done them justice in our attempts to carry on their music, in a way that they would have liked.
